| Resumen: ||The taxonomy of the neotropical genus Conostegia (Melastomataceae) is revised. Of the 113 names that appear in the systematic literature, 42 species are maintained. Eleven are not validly published; 47 names are listed in synonymy and 13 epithets are referred to other genera. An infrageneric classification is proposed, with three subgenera delineated. Six sections are described in the largest subgenus, and species groupings within each of the infrageneric taxa are indicated. A key to the subgenera and species is provided. The species concept used is discussed, as are the criteria for establishing infrageneric taxa. Several cases of apparent hybridization are examined. What is known of the morphology, distribution, and ecology of the genus as a whole and of the individual species is presented. The new genus Florbella is proposed based on two Peruvian species, the material of which was formerly attributed to Conostegia. One of these, F. wurdackii Schnell is new; both the new genus and the new species will be formally published elsewhere|
